Staying Warm For Winter in Litchfield County

Winter in on the East Coast is not for everyone. You need to be ready to handle having cold hands and feet as soon as the leaves drop. The low lands of southern New Milford enjoys the slightly warmer temperatures near the river area, as the humidity can raise the ground temps. Once in a while the downtown stretch enjoys chunks of frozen river that float by young field and downtown New Milford riverwalk. So in case it’s not clear to some newer folks, it gets cold up here.

As you head up to our northern neighborhoods you are welcomed to what we call the Litchfield Hills. Here you’ll find that drop in temperature is about 5 more degrees on average. Colder. New Milford is essentially the land between the Housatonic River and the Shepaug River. With ups and downs, and acres of beautiful in between.

With ample moisture and a rolling landscape, our winters are kissed with the touch of snow on a regular occasion each season. Get ready to shovel or snow blow, or hire your favorite local snow plow crew. (Unless you’re in a condo). Either way, we recommend putting your windshield wipers up, keeping a scraper or sweeper handy. Own a good hat, a warm scarf and a light weight pair of gloves, it makes the difference if your skin is covered. The snow is not as bad when you’ve got the right gear. If you shovel snow, bend your knees, lever the handle off your thigh and invest in a great pair of winter boots. If you burn wood, make sure your stack is covered and you’ve got easy access to the pile. Running a wood stove is a luxury many New Milford residents enjoy. The smell of a chimney smoke is nostalgic and gives you that golden memory from winters past.

Winter time is magic, the forest sleeps and the gardens are empty, but the roots are hard at work, and the residents are hunkered down and still thriving.
